Jordan Creek Pediatric Dentistry's Cavities Guide

Welcome to Jordan Creek Pediatric Dentistry's Informative Page on Cavities

At Jordan Creek Pediatric Dentistry, we understand the concerns parents have about cavities. Cavities, also known as dental caries or tooth decay, are one of the most common dental problems in children. Our goal is to provide you with comprehensive information to prevent and treat cavities, ensuring your child maintains a healthy and happy smile.

What Are Cavities?

Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes. They are caused primarily by a combination of factors, including bacteria in the mouth, frequent snacking, sipping sugary drinks, and not cleaning teeth well.

How Do Cavities Form?

The process of cavity formation includes:

  • Plaque Formation: Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, constantly forms on teeth. When sugar and starches are not cleaned off teeth, bacteria quickly begin feeding on them and produce acids.
  • Enamel Attack: The acids in plaque remove minerals in the tooth's hard, outer enamel. This erosion causes tiny openings or holes in the enamel — the first stage of cavities.
  • Dentin Decay: If untreated, the acid reaches the next layer of the teeth, called dentin. This layer is softer and less resistant to acid.
  • Pulp Damage: If decay continues, bacteria and acids may reach the tooth's inner material (pulp), which contains nerves and blood vessels. This can cause pain and swelling.

Signs and Symptoms of Cavities:

  • Toothache or spontaneous pain
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, and sweet foods or drinks
  • Visible holes or pits in the teeth
  • Pain when biting down

Preventing Cavities:

  • Brushing: Brush your child’s teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Flossing: Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth.
  • Healthy Eating: Limit sugary and starchy snacks and beverages.
  • Regular Checkups: Visit Jordan Creek Pediatric Dentistry every six months for routine cleanings and exams.
  • Fluoride Treatments: Professional fluoride treatments can strengthen enamel.
  • Dental Sealants: Sealants can prevent decay on the biting surfaces of the back teeth.

Treating Cavities:

Treatment of cavities depends on their severity and your child’s situation. Options include:

  • Fillings: The most common treatment, where decayed material is removed and replaced with a filling.
  • Crowns: Used for more extensive decay or weakened teeth.
  • Root Canals: Necessary if decay reaches the tooth’s pulp.
  • Tooth Extractions: In severe cases where a tooth cannot be saved.
